| Drive
south from Flachau on the A10 and after about 2
hours you'll arrive at a corner of Austria, just
south of Villach, that borders Slovenia
to the east and Italy to
the west. This
region of Italy is called Friuli
Venezia Giulia. The main cities/towns in
this region are Trieste, Udine and Pordenone.
We've
skied in Tarvisio
once but have never visited in the summer.
Therefore the following information comes courtesy
of Emma and Dave.

Tarvisio
(web site) Tarvisio
is an ideal summer base for exploring the border region of the Julian and Carnic Alps.
There are lots of walks in the surrounding area, all clearly marked and route numbered.
Our favourite restaurants in Tarvisio are the Taverna Tarvisio
on the main square, The hotel Valle Verde (opposite the aeroplane) and the golf club! |

|
Laghi di Fusine
(web site) Two idyllic lakes with forest around and the Julian Alps behind.
You can walk around both lakes (easy, 1 hour) or up to the scree slopes below Monte Mangart (3-4
hours - lots of well marked paths with generous times) for great views back towards the lakes.
There is no swimming in the lakes but a cafe and boats to hire. |
|
|
Monte Lussari
(web site) Monte
Lussari is a tiny village perched on the mountain
top. You can either take the cable car
or walk up. At the top there are great views in all
directions and a pretty church to explore.

Venzone Venzone
is about one hours drive south-west of Tarvisio. The village was destroyed by an earthquake in 1976 but has been rebuilt as a national heritage site.
It is a picturesque stone village with a central square
and city walls. |
