Slovenia...

Slovenia is a small (2 million inhabitants) yet very beautiful country.  It has just about everything, from mountains and lakes to grassy plains.  We have visited many times, both in the winter for skiing and also in the summer for walking, swimming and general exploring.  From Flachau you can enter Slovenia on the north-east border via Graz, or in the north-west via Villach - which is best depends on where in Slovenia you want to go.

Bled (web site)

This is a town in beautiful surroundings.  It's main feature is the church on an island in the centre of a stunning lake.  Hiring a rowing boat is a great way to see the lake and island.  If you avoid visiting in July and August you will be guaranteed a peaceful trip.

Bohinj (web site)

Bohinj is a lake rather than a town and is again very beautiful.  A good trip is to take the Vogel cable car up to the top of the mountain to get a great view.

Celje (web site)

A large industrial town, Celje has an interesting centre worth visiting mainly during the day as we found it was very quiet in the evening.  The river runs through the heart of the town and there is a lovely walk along side it.

Izola (web site)

All of the Slovenian coastal resorts have a strong Italian influence from the architecture to the ice cream.  Izola has a particularly nice harbour area.

Kranjska Gora (web site)

A traditional village which makes a great base for exploring the Triglav National Park.  Its centre piece is its church and town square.  It has a good variety of bars and restaurants.

Maribor (web site)

Maribor is the second biggest city in Slovenia.  As such it has some industrial and high rise accommodation areas but it's centre is traditional and has lots to explore.  It is a good base for exploring the Pohorje region.

Piran (web site)

This coastal town offers a winding old town to explore, along with a nice harbour.  There is good swimming from the coastal wall and an array of restaurants along the sea front.

Predjama (web site)

Predjama castle is an imposing building set into the mountainside.  It is a must, at least to see from the outside.  The castle hosts regular festival days so check out the website before you visit.

Ptuj (web site)

Ptuj is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia.  It is also very colourful and the nearby lake makes for nice walking.

Rogla (web site)

Set in the beautiful Pohorje region, Rogla provides a great base for a walking or cycling holiday.  It is also good for exploring the many pretty villages in the area.

Triglav National Park

The Triglav is truly stunning.  Discover it on foot or by car but, however you travel, ensure that you allow yourself enough time to really see what's there!
