Our
Review
Altenmarkt
is marketed as a linked resort with Zauchensee but is in
fact only linked to it by road. Whereas it is
linked to Radstadt by piste. However it is
possible to see a marked difference in investment
between the two resorts with Altenmarkt having older
lifts and Radstadt having mostly modern lifts. We
really enjoy skiing here, the pistes are mostly quiet
and there are no lift queues. This means that
after a dump of snow the fresh powder doesn't get
tracked out so quickly. The runs afford great
views of both villages and also across to the Gamskogel
above Zauchensee. The pistes are wide and tree
lined, great for beginners and intermediates. The
two villages are separated by the Kemahdhohe (1677 M)
peak. The pistes are not very high so the runs are
usually some of the last in the Sportwelt to open. There
is a single base station on each side of the
mountain. The Altenmarkt access point is on the
road from Altenmarkt village to Zauchensee. The Radstadt
base station is up the hill from Radstadt
village. Getting
There from Flachau Four
options: 1)
Drive to either base station where there is sufficient
parking. 2)
Take the normal service bus to the centre of Altenmarkt
which runs approximately every half an hour from Flachau
but does not start until about 09:30 in the
morning. It is then necessary to change to the ski
bus in Altenmarkt heading towards Zauchensee but get off
at the base station just outside the village. 3)
Take the service bus directly to Radstadt Post and then
the ski bus to the base station. This is the same
as the service bus to Altenmarkt. 4)
Our favourite option is to take the ski bus to
Flachauwinkl (Roßkopf), ski over the top and down into
Zauchensee village and then take the ski bus to
Altenmarkt. The bus to Altenmarkt runs every 20
minutes and takes about 10 minutes.
