Our Review

The ski resort of Flachauwinkl is split into two areas, Mooskopf (Sunshine Shuttle) and Roßkopf (Zauchensee side).  They are linked by a short stretch of road that runs under the A10 motorway and serviced by regular road train and bus.

The Mooskopf side is linked by piste with Kleinarl and has one access point in Flachauwinkl; the Sunshine Shuttle.  Access to the pistes from Kleinarl is in the centre of the village via the Champion Shuttle.

Flachauwinkl/Kleinarl has a good variety of sunny tree-lined pistes.  The sun is on the Flachauwinkl side in the morning and the Kleinarl side in the afternoon.  Whilst great in peak season, this sunshine can mean that Flachauwinkl/Kleinarl is not the best place to go when snow coverage is poor.

We recommend skiing off the Power Shuttle chair (cold - no hood!) for great off-piste action through the trees and also the pretty tree-lined skiing in the area off the Furstwandl and Schuttalm drag-lifts (Kleinarl side).

On the Flachauwinkl side and serviced by the Absolut 6-er chair lift is the 'Absolute Park', by far the largest park in the Salzburger Sportwelt.  The park is split into 'expert' and 'beginners' areas but even the 'beginners' area is fairly scary!  Some of the kickers in the 'expert' area are just enormous and really only for world-class snowboarders.  At the bottom of the Absolut 6-er chair is the 'Chill House'.  This is a new 2-floor heated glass building that has skateboard ramps on the ground floor and comfy sofas on the upper floor with great views over the beginners' park.  It's a good place to warm up on a cold day.

New for the 2008/2009 season is "The Stash".  This is an off-piste area accessed from the Powder Shuttle that is well known to anyone who has skied in Flachawinkl.  However, they have now branded it and added some interesting features such as jumps, rails, rollers etc.  Here is a link to the official site: The Stash.

On the mountain hut front we would strongly recommend the Winklalm (top of Sunshine Shuttle) for good food, an excellent fire and even better Glühwein.

Getting There from Flachau

2 options:

1) You can drive there and park up at the bottom of the Sunshine lift in Flachauwinkl.  Either drive straight through Flachau or go one stop down the A10 motorway (Villach direction).  You can also drive to Kleinarl and park up by the bottom of the Champion Shuttle.

2) Ski buses to Flachauwinkl run all day, every 20 mins or so, and will drop you at either of the Flachauwinkl areas.
