Our Review

Although Zauchensee is marketed with Altenmarkt it is not linked to it by piste.  However it is linked to the Roßkopf area of Flachauwinkl.  The 2 ski areas are on either side of the Roßkopf peak (1929m).  They both suffer from some quite old slow lifts in places but in the main access to the piste is good.

The Flachauwinkl side is basically one run from top to bottom serviced by a gondola and an old 3-man chair.  However it is a nice run and does have red and blue options.  The runs coming down to the bottom of the chair are particularly good fun to warm up on in the morning.

In Zauchensee there are some big wide pistes which are excellent, particularly on quieter days.  It has some of the steepest pistes in the area and the World Cup run is good to get your thighs burning!  It is also slightly higher (2188m) than the rest of the Sportwelt and you can use this to your advantage when the snow cover is poor.  On the opposite side of the village the Rauchkopf area is well worth skiing with a lovely blue run winding down or a challenging black.

The village of Zauchensee is quite small and remote, so unless you like to be somewhere that has an American ski village feel it is better to base yourself somewhere else and travel to Zauchensee.  However if you did stay in the village, wherever your hotel, you would be within steps of the slopes.

Getting There from Flachau

3 options:

1) Drive to either Flachauwinkl or Zauchensee and park up at the base.  The road from Altenmarkt to Zauchensee can be fairly treacherous after a heavy snowfall.

2) Ski buses to Flachauwinkl run all day, every 20 mins or so, and will drop you at either of the Flachauwinkl areas.  We recommend this option if you don't have a car or want to enjoy the après ski.

3) Take the service bus to Altenmarkt village centre and then change to the ski bus that runs up to Zauchensee.
